I wanted to touch on another topic that is very popular these days: Global Warming. This is where I probably lean more towards the left than any other topic. So let me start with what I believe to be the science behind global warming. To put it very simply, if you put a plant behind the tailpipe of your car and leave it there while the car is running, the plant will probably die. Now, put that on a global scale and you can imagine the results. If we are choking of our oxygen supply, that's probably not a good thing. Also, if our atmosphere is being eroded by all these exhaust fumes, which is causing more UV rays from the sun to hit the earth, that's probably not a good thing either.
So, if this is happening, it's causing the polar icecaps to melt. All this melting ice is flowing into the warmer waters through the global tide systems. As this colder water mixes with the warmer waters and evaporates into the atmosphere it causes all the crazy weather. We all know that cold air mixing with warm air is what causes tornados, etc. So yes, global warming can actually be causing cooling in some parts of the world as the colder waters are moving to warmer areas.
Now, you can find thousands of "expert scientists" on either side of this argument. So I say if we really don't know for sure one way or the other, then why would we not err on the side of caution? If we can do things to conserve our resources and keep our planet clean, why not? Pretty simple, right?
Al Gore was sued in the UK for his film. He lost on 11 key findings of fact. Most important to your first comment... CO2 emissions do not cause warming. CO2 is a lagging indicator following increases by 800-2000 years.

The benefit for this cost cannot be accurately gauged.
China and the south asian developing nations burn shit tons of coal and that will not change.
The Kyoto Protocals were poorly received, not complied with and never will be by a state that isn't looking for economic suicide.
